The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a civil rights organization headquarted in Montgomery, Alabama. It was founded by Morris Dees and Joe Levin, two local lawyers "who shared a commitment to racial equality" in 1971. The Center's first president was civil rights activist Julian Bond. According to its website, SPLC is "dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry" and seeking justice for "the most vulnerable members of our society." SPLC uses litigation, education and other forms of advocacy.
