Promoting civic engagement by increasing voter registration and supporting voter participation in elections. Service Platform of Brooks Barrett

Every election is determined by the people who take action and vote. One person can make a difference and one vote can be the difference. Unfortunately, voter participation for general elections has been on a steady decline since the 1960s. In 2014, midterm election voter turnout was the lowest it has been in seven decades, with a national voter turnout of 36.3 percent. To further this perspective, almost twice as many people shopped on Black Friday than voted in the 2014 midterm elections. It is disheartening to know that less than half of the United States population felt as though their voice did not matter, or even worse felt as though it mattered but was not registered to vote or did not know how to vote. If citizens do not exercise their right to vote, then how are their voices accurately being represented and how are we truly electing the best leaders for our state and country? It is important to me to not only increase voter registration across the state of North Carolina, but encourage voter participation and target the root of a huge issue: voter apathy. As Abraham Lincoln once said, "The ballot is stronger than the bullet." When we come together as a community, and vote for our best representatives, we can truly take this state and this country to greater heights. Everyone's voice matters, including yours, and casting a vote is one of the best ways to ensure that your voice will be heard. It's Your Voice. It's Your Choice. It's Your Vote.
