Indiana Coalition for Public Education–Monroe County (ICPE–Monroe County) advocates for all children to have high quality, equitable, well-funded schools We believe and fight to support the following: Our children deserve a single, well-funded system of public schools. Our community benefits from excellent public schools. Schools thrive by developing mutual respect and cooperation between teachers, students, and parents. All children should have access to a full, vibrant curriculum. Teaching, learning, and growth cannot be quantified by standardized tests. Assessments should be used to support children, teachers, and schools. Teachers are professionals and deserve our support. Local control of education is essential so that schools are accountable to the communities they serve. Recent bills passed by Indiana’s legislature have undermined public education. These bills have deprived schools of stable funding. They have expanded the charter school market, dividing resources and communities. They have channeled public education dollars to private, mostly religious schools through vouchers. They have scapegoated and marginalized teachers. They have emphasized high-stakes testing and grading of schools, narrowing curricula and opportunity. Schools are not factories to standardize kids for our economy; they are places for all children to develop their full potential to participate in a diverse and democratic society. Please join us.
