Committed to a FRACK FREE COLORADO!!! We are a peoples movement working to facilitate a democratic transition away from fracking and toaward renewables in the State of Colorado. We support all people working toward this cause and intend to create cohesion between different organization and individuals, so that we are a powerful movement that cannot be ignored. We intend to accomplish this goal through educating our communities and providing people with the tools and direction for taking action. Frack-free CO is a collaboration of concerned citizens, companies like Patagonia, and organizations Water Defense, Erie Rising, Artists Against Fracking, Food and Water Watch, eTown, and Rock the Earth working, together to end fracking in Colorado. We are organizing a public gathering on October 23rd, 2012 with big bands, celebrities and sage scientists who are all concerned about fracking in Colorado and beyond to ask Governor Hickenlooper to protect Colorado’s precious water and the health of its citizens. Our water is being contaminated. Our air is being polluted. Our children are getting sick. Our beautiful land is being destroyed. We can choose renewable energy today and it will rebuild our economy. We can choose sustainable farming today (natural gas is the main ingredient in non-organic fertilizers) and live healthier, more connected lives. We can consume less of the right products today. Let’s choose that future now. Join us at Civic Park in Denver, CO on October 23rd at noon! A few stats about fracking: • There are 48,000 active wells in Colorado. More than 8,000 of them are closer to homes than the COGCC’s 350 foot setback mandates, thus denying the state to prevent or mitigate adverse impacts to human health. 82,000 inactive wells are about to be reactivated. • There have been 1000 documented toxic spills in CO; more than 43% of them have contaminated rivers and drinking water sources • 2-8 million gallons of fresh water are used per well • 10,000 and 40,000 gallons of chemicals are used in each well to kill microbes and “slicken” pipes • 40-70 percent of the chemically-loaded water comes back up and pollutes our air. Of the 300-odd chemicals presumed in fracking fluid, 40% are endocrine disrupters and 1/3 are suspected carcinogens. 1/3 are developmental toxicants. Over 60% can harm the brain and nervous system. • A single well site can have as many as 52 wellbores onsite which produces 104 tons of hydrocarbon vapors per year. • Each site requires at least 1,000 diesel truck trips which is highly polluting and a heavy load on roads and bridges.
