Black Women’s Blueprint, Inc. is a civil and human rights organization of women and men. Our purpose is to take action to secure social, political and economic equality in American society now. We work to develop a culture where women of African descent are fully empowered and where gender, race and other disparities are erased. We engage in progressive research, historical documentation, policy advocacy and organize on social justice issues steeped in the struggles of Black women within their communities and within dominant culture. Placing Black Women's Issues Squarely Within the Context of the Larger Racial Justice Concerns of Black Communities. To accomplish our mission and implement action responsive to our principles, the founders and board of directors have developed three (3) units: o The organization’s largest initiative is it’s Truth Commission. By definition, “Truth Commissions” or “Truth and Reconciliation Commissions” are groups organized and tasked with discovering and revealing past wrongdoing by a government (or, depending on the circumstances, non-state actors and community members), in order to resolve conflict left over from the past. The Truth Commission affirms the Black historical context as inextricably linked to the current state of affairs for women in Black communities and the hostile policies and cultural norms that continue to impact their lives. The Commission organizes monthly teach-ins using film, theater (http://www.mothertonguemonologues.org/) and other art to help community members hold each other as well as policy-makers, elected officials, and community leaders accountable for personal, social and economic rights. It is a comprehensive program combining civil and human rights documentation and aggressive public education to undermine oppression as it specifically impacts women and Black communities. o Through its Gender Justice Fund Black Women’s Blueprint develops innovative community partnership, shares resources and gives a portion of all event funds raised via its events, its Freedom Lounge (http://myfreedomlounge.com/ ) and giving circles to individual activists and groups that share its mission and objectives. o Our Black HerStory Project hosts the Museum of Women's Resistance (http://www.museumofwomensresistance.org/) and works to end the invisibility and devaluation of Black women and girls in public spheres by teaching about their participation and contribution to Women’s History and to Black Historical issues—through educational, interactive, innovative art exhibitions and public programs. This initiative also delivers Heritage workshops (http://blackwomensblueprint.com/teaching-black-history-through-arts/) for boys and girls in public schools in order to provide alternatives to the negative representations of Black women and men in popular culture, and creating greater knowledge, respect and appreciation of the relevance of Black women and girls to contemporary life.
