AAF is a pan-Asian nonprofit that represents and supports 70+ Asian-serving social service organizations in NYC. We aim to overcome the significant obstacles that Asian Americans face by empowering our member nonprofits to better serve their communities. Established: 1989 Annual operating budget: approx $1.3 mil Board Directors: 6 Full Time Staff: 5 Asian Americans are 15% of New York city’s population, and the fastest-growing ethnic group. Yet, they continue to encounter significant obstacles to their well being and success. • 70% are immigrants. • 25 % live in poverty and that number keeps growing • Of immigrants in poverty, 70% of Asian immigrants do not speak English well. When it comes to mental health, suicide was one of the top ten leading causes of death for Asian New Yorkers from 1997-2016. We gather research and data about the pan-Asian community, and then use the findings to to advocate for Asian New Yorkers at the local and state government level, with corporations and funders, and the media, and to use our leadership role to tackle some of the toughest issues facing the community. AAF aims to overcome the significant obstacles that Asian Americans face by empowering our member nonprofits to better serve their communities. Our leadership role helps us strengthen the collective voice of the more than 20 ethnic groups—diverse in language, culture, and religion—that make up New York’s Asian community.
